Green spirulina for dogs

Arthrospira platensis

Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) is a microscopic blue-green algae that naturally occurs in alkaline lakes. Despite its name, spirulina is not a plant, but a cyanobacterium. In herbal medicine and naturopathy, spirulina is primarily used as a nourishing and supportive substance, not as a stimulating herb.

For dogs, spirulina is used as a supplementary food to support general vitality, resistance and skin condition.

Nutritional profile of spirulina

Spirulina is known for its high nutrient density:

  • High protein content (± 60%) with essential amino acids

  • Contains B vitamins , including B1, B2 and B3

  • Rich in chlorophyll , carotenoids and antioxidants

  • Contains minerals such as iron, magnesium, calcium and potassium

  • Contains small amounts of natural iodine

Effect on dogs

Spirulina is often used in dogs for:

1. Support of the immune system
The antioxidants and bioactive substances support the natural defense system, especially during periods of stress, recovery, moulting or reduced condition.

2. Skin and coat
Thanks to chlorophyll, minerals and fatty acids, spirulina can contribute to healthier skin and a shinier coat.

3. General vitality
Spirulina nourishes the body at a cellular level and is therefore often used for older dogs, sporting dogs or dogs that look a bit listless.

4. Support of detox processes
Spirulina can bind to certain waste products, thus supporting the natural cleansing function of the liver and intestines. This happens gently and gradually.

Use and dosage

Spirulina is n't an herb to give in unlimited doses . Due to its concentrated nature, a low dose is sufficient.

General guideline:

  • Small dog: ± ¼ teaspoon per day

  • Medium sized dog: ± ½ teaspoon per day

  • Large dog: maximum 1 teaspoon per day

Preferably:

  • In short periods

  • Or with rest days in between

  • Always build up slowly

Mix with wet food or something creamy for better acceptance.

When should you be careful with spirulina?

In herbal medicine, spirulina is not recommended for:

  • Dogs with thyroid disorders (due to natural iodine)

  • Pregnancy or lactation

  • Autoimmune problems

  • Puppies younger than 6 months

If in doubt, do not use or first consult a veterinarian or therapist.

Our CTO, Chief Treat Officer, in action

Some dogs will eat anything. Ravens won't.
He tastes, assesses, and decides—with precision, focus, and a generous dose of enthusiasm. For him, snacking is a serious business (and a bit of a sport).

Every snack he catches tells a story. About origin, quality, and care. About ingredients that are truly natural, without unnecessary additives or vague claims.
Because as Chief Treat Officer, Raven takes his job very seriously: only what is honest, sustainable and tasty makes it to the shop.

And yes, sometimes that involves a bit of chaos, crumbs, and flying candy. But that's part of it. Shop with Marley's isn't about perfection—it's about joy, conscious choices, and the confidence that what you give is good.

Our natural dog treats and sustainable products are carefully selected for dogs with taste and owners who share their conscious lifestyle. Whether it's a training treat, a hearty chew, or a responsible treat: Raven has tested (and usually approved) them all.
